A revolutionary new dental abutment that treats infection has been developed by an Austrian inventor, Dr. Mario Kern. Dr. Kern, who also conducts dental research and practices in implantology, has found a way to combine 3D printing with a special additive that can tackle disease and infection.
Implant abutments are used to connect the metal implant screw to the dental crown (the visible replica of the tooth). However, with dental implant popularity rising, so have the numbers of reported cases of peri-implantitis. This is an oral disease that causes bone loss and receding gums around the implant site. Not only does this expose the abutment but it will eventually lead to the failure of the restoration. Therefore, this new technology could improve the chances of successful implantation. Although success rates are extremely high with implants, this new invention could make them even more likely to succeed. Dr. Kern has named the technology EAP (Extended Anatomic Platform) which he is currently launching at the International Dental Show in Cologne, Germany.
