Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Why do wisdom teeth need to be extracted?

Wisdom teeth are the third molars which grow at the very back of your mouth. They often appear during the late teens or early twenties, when all other adult teeth have erupted and settled in place. Due to this, wisdom teeth can become stuck or grow incorrectly, causing pain and affecting your other teeth.

Some wisdom teeth do not need to be extracted and can be monitored at your regular dental appointments. However, if your wisdom tooth is causing severe pain or swelling, and risks affecting your overall oral health, it is best to extract it to protect your smile.

Treatment options for extracting wisdom teeth

No treatment

If your wisdom tooth is not causing you any problems, no treatment is the best option. We monitor the tooth during your regular dental check ups.

Antibiotics

In situations where pus or a swelling has formed, antibiotics provide temporary relief.

Extraction

If your wisdom tooth has caused infection, cyst formation, tooth decay or gum disease, a wisdom tooth extraction is the best choice of treatment. It enables us to completely remove the infected tooth, eliminating your pain and improving your oral health.

Coronectomy

If the roots of a wisdom tooth on the lower arch are very close to the neighbouring nerve tissue, a coronectomy is often the best treatment. It involves removing the crown of the wisdom tooth but leaving the roots behind. Lower wisdom teeth can lie extremely close to the inferior alveolar nerve, which supplies the lower lip with sensory sensation. If there is a risk of damaging this nerve with a wisdom tooth extraction, we will opt for a coronectomy instead.

How does wisdom tooth extraction work?

1. Consultation

At your comprehensive consultation, we examine your wisdom tooth and the surrounding teeth and gums to ensure an extraction is the best course of action for your case. We may take a 3D CBCT scan of your wisdom tooth so we can accurately see how close the roots of your wisdom tooth are to the nearby nerves and vital tissues. We also explain the treatment process and give you the chance to ask any questions.

2. Preparation

On the day of your wisdom tooth extraction, we use local anaesthetic to numb the affected area of your mouth and ensure you remain comfortable throughout. We use painless dental injections and can also provide sedation for more nervous patients.

3. Extraction

To begin your extraction, we gently push the gum back to access your wisdom tooth. If the tooth is easily accessible, we can simply remove it using the atraumatic tooth extraction technique, which minimises trauma to the surrounding tissues. For larger or impacted wisdom teeth, we may need to shave some bone around the tooth, or break it into parts, in order to remove it correctly.

4. Healing

To finish your extraction, we replace your gum and use self-dissolving stitches to hold it in place so it heals well. You may experience some pain and swelling after your wisdom tooth has been removed, but this can be managed with pain medication as advised.
