Why do I need a dental bone graft?
When a tooth is lost or extracted, the bone in that empty tooth socket naturally starts to remodel and shrink (resorb) over time. After several months, this can result in significant bone loss at the site. Because the upper jaw naturally has softer bone compared to the tougher, denser bone of the lower jaw, preserving or rebuilding this bone structure is vital if you are planning to have dental implants.
The ideal window for placing a dental implant is usually around 8 weeks after a tooth extraction. This allows the soft gum tissue to heal completely and any underlying infection to clear up, while keeping most of your natural bone intact. To accurately evaluate your bone structure, we will take an advanced Cone Beam CT (CBCT) scan during your assessment visit to check the exact location and volume of bone available.
