Gum Infections

What are the symptoms of a gum infection?

  • Inflamed gums
  • Receding gums
  • Gaps emerging between teeth
  • Drifting teeth
  • A bad taste in the mouth
  • Swollen gums
  • Soreness or tenderness in the mouth
  • Loose teeth
  • Changes in the bite
  • Pus discharging from gums

What is gum disease?

There are two types of gum disease:

Gingivitis occurs when the gums become inflamed. With this stage, the damage is reversible with appropriate treatment. The treatment for gingivitis involves seeing a hygienist for regular appointments.

Periodontitis develops if gingivitis is left untreated for a period of time. With periodontitis, bone loss occurs, which is irreversible. The treatment for periodontitis involves seeing a specialist periodontist for deep teeth cleaning under local anaesthetic. If periodontitis is left to progress, it can cause the loss of the bone that anchors the teeth in the jaw, causing teeth to become loose and lead to eventual loss of teeth.

Am I at risk of developing gum disease?

More than 50% of the population suffer from some type of gum disease. The real danger with gum disease is that it can progress painlessly and sufferers may not notice the damage it is causing until it is too late. Teeth then may have to be extracted due to severe bone loss caused by the gum disease and repeated gum infections.

Ineffective teeth cleaning is the number one cause of gum disease, but other factors to consider include smoking, genetics, pregnancy, diabetes, certain medications, stress, poor diet, and hormonal changes.

What treatment is available for gum infections?

Professional hygiene treatment and cleaning of teeth, alongside an effective daily oral hygiene regime, is often enough to treat gum disease. You will first need to see one of our dentists for an assessment of your gums. The subsequent treatment will involve seeing either the hygienist or our specialist periodontist, depending on the severity of the disease.
