Dental Hygiene

Why are hygiene appointments important?

Gum health is vital for good oral health. We are best placed to support your gum health, preventing gum disease and getting rid of any bacteria that is already irritating your gums. Receding gums and even tooth loss can occur if you do not treat gum disease. The connection between gum disease and other health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease makes maintaining good gum health beneficial to your general health.

Gum disease is often overlooked because its symptoms are mild. During the appointment, we carry out a check to spot gum disease, putting us in a position to catch it before it can worsen.

Our hygiene treatments

At Pearl Dental Clinic, we offer two types of hygiene treatment: a standard scale and polish and Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT). Both are available in 30-minute or 45-minute appointments depending on your needs.

Dental Hygiene

Standard Scale and Polish

A scale and polish is the traditional approach to professional cleaning. During your appointment, plaque and tartar (calculus) build-up will be removed from your teeth and along the gum line using specialist instruments. Your teeth are then polished to remove surface stains and leave your smile looking brighter.

To finish, we’ll provide personalised advice on brushing techniques, interdental cleaning with tools like TePe brushes and floss, and how to look after your teeth and gums at home.

For most patients, regular hygiene visits every 3 to 6 months are enough to keep things in good shape.

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)

If you’d prefer a gentler alternative to traditional scaling, Guided Biofilm Therapy is worth considering. GBT uses AirFlow technology and a special disclosing dye to target and remove biofilm (the sticky layer of bacteria that builds up on your teeth) more comfortably than standard scale & polish.

Here’s how it works:

  1. A coloured dye is applied to your teeth to highlight where biofilm has built up
  2. Using AirFlow technology, a gentle stream of air, warm water, and fine powder removes the biofilm and any light surface staining
  3. Any remaining tartar is carefully removed
  4. Your teeth are left feeling smooth, clean, and noticeably fresher

GBT is pain-free for most patients and is particularly popular with people who have sensitive teeth, dental anxiety, or who simply just find traditional scaling uncomfortable.

GBT with a Hygienist or Dentist

At Pearl Dental Clinic, GBT can be carried out by one of our hygienists or by one of our dentists. GBT with a dentist includes some extras:

  • Fluoride foam therapy to strengthen enamel, reduce sensitivity, and protect against decay
  • Loupes magnification for enhanced precision, allowing the dentist to identify and clean areas that are difficult to see with the naked eye

30-Minute vs 45-Minute Appointments

Our 30-minute appointment is ideal if you attend regularly and have relatively low levels of build-up.

If you need a more thorough clean, we also offer 45-minute extended appointments. We’d typically recommend the longer session if:

  • It’s been more than 6 months since your last hygiene visit
  • You have significant tartar build-up
  • You have signs of gum disease
  • We’ve specifically advised an extended appointment at a previous visit

Our team will let you know which length is best for you going forward.

Our stain removal treatments at Pearl Dental Clinic

While staining on the teeth is very common, it can make people feel self-conscious. Some people naturally have a slight yellow or grey tinge to their teeth, but we’re able to provide solutions that help patients smile with confidence again.

Extrinsic staining

Extrinsic stains occur on the outer surface of the teeth. They are usually due to the accumulation of plaque or the frequent intake of tea, coffee, red wine, curry, and fizzy drinks. While doing your hygiene treatment, we use the AirFlow advanced stain removal technique, where we combine air and sodium bicarbonate with a stream of water to remove plaque and surface stains quickly and comfortably.

Intrinsic staining

Intrinsic stains are found within the structure of the tooth. They can be caused by fluoride from toothpaste and present as both brown stains and white flecks. Some antibiotics can cause certain people to experience a change in the appearance of their teeth. Also, some mouthwashes contain chlorhexidine which can cause tooth discolouration. Older people could develop brown staining as a result of a thinner layer of protective enamel. Both smoking and tooth decay can cause extrinsic and intrinsic staining on the teeth. The use of tetracycline antibiotics amongst children can also cause tooth discolouration. Intrinsic staining is harder to remove with cleaning alone and may need professional teeth whitening for a more noticeable result.

What happens during a hygiene appointment?

At the start of your appointment, we ask you a little about your oral care routine at home and if you have any areas of concern. We also ask about your overall general health.

The main part of your hygiene appointment involves the hygiene treatment itself. Whether you opt for a standard scale and polish or a Guided Biofilm Therapy session, you’ll leave with your teeth feeling smoother, cleaner and brighter.

Lastly, we will give you some advice on how to properly care for your teeth and gums. We can show you how to use interdental cleaning tools properly so you can keep up the hard work at home.
