People living in London who have dental implants may be surprised to hear about a fashion that cosmetic dentists in Cape Town are being asked about.
AFP reported how some youngsters in the country are showing off their gappy smiles.
Speaking to the news provider, a 21-year-old explained he asked for his incisors to be taken out because they were "huge".
He said: "It is fashion, everyone has it."
Rob Barry, from the University of the Western Cape, told the website that he had to make thousands of teeth implants for people to wear when they need to look more acceptable – such as at work or on special occasions.
The oral health professional stated: "Almost every week I get some or other teenager in here wanting teeth out."
Another doctor from the University of Cape Town’s human biology department also noted that removing gnashers was the "in thing to do", adding the fad had been around for some 60 years.
In other international cosmetic dentist news, DPA reported how a reveller at this year’s Oktoberfest in Germany left his dentures at the event.
