Suffering from a toothache can be very painful.

What Causes ToothacheThis, in turn, can cause disruption to daily routines and cause distress. Often people ask how they might treat a toothache at home. In reality, this is not advisable. Seeking professional help and treatment is really the only way to treat this problem.

What Causes Toothache

There are many causes of toothache. This is another reason why self-treating is unlikely to be successful. Different issues require different treatment, which only a trained dental professional will know. There is often more to a toothache than meets the eye. The most common causes are as follows:

  1. A root canal infection. This is where bacteria and infection penetrate the tooth and enter the root canal and soft pulp.
  2. Dental decay. Sometimes tooth decay can be that severe that it causes pain and discomfort.
  3. A crack, split, or breakage. Although this seems like an obvious one, it is not always easy to tell that a tooth has become damaged.
  4. An abscess. Abscesses can form as the body’s way of trying to control infection. This will need professional intervention to stop wider complications developing.
  5. An infection in the gum. When the gum becomes infected it can cause pain to develop in the soft tissue, but also into the jaw, up into the face, in the neck, and ear.
  6. Bruxism (clenching and grinding the teeth). Often this can occur at night, therefore, the patient has no idea that they are doing it. If you start to experience headaches, jaw ache, pressure buildup, or unexplained tooth breakages then contact your dentist for further investigation.
