Same Day Dentures

What Are Same Day Dentures?

Same day dentures, sometimes called immediate dentures, are dentures that are made and fitted on the same day you need them. They’re typically used in two situations:

  • After a tooth extraction where you need a replacement straight away so you’re not left with a visible gap
  • When an existing denture breaks and you need a new one made quickly

Because we have a denture technician working on-site, we can take impressions, have the denture made, and fit it all in the same place rather than sending the work off to an external lab and waiting days or weeks.

How Does It Work?

1. Consultation With a Dentist

You’ll see one of our general dentists who will assess your mouth, discuss what you need, and check that a same day denture is the right option for you. If a tooth extraction is needed, this can be planned at the same appointment.

2. Impressions

Your dentist will take impressions of your mouth. For larger dentures, a bite registration may also be needed to make sure everything lines up properly.

3. Your Denture Is Made On-Site

Our on-site denture technician will select the right colour, shape, and size of teeth to match your natural smile and get to work making your denture. Same day dentures are made using cold cure acrylic, which allows them to be produced in around 1 to 2 hours.

4. Fitting

Once your denture is ready, our dentist will fit it, make any adjustments, and check you’re happy with everything and comfortable.

Top tip: The earlier you come in, the better. If you arrive in the morning, there’s a good chance your denture will be ready by the afternoon. Later arrivals can usually expect it within 24 hours.

Same Day vs Standard Dentures

Same day dentures are made from cold cure acrylic so they can be made quickly. Standard dentures use warm cure acrylic, which takes 1-2 days to set into place but produces a stronger and more durable result.

If you’re not in a hurry, it’s worth considering a standard denture for a longer-lasting finish. But if you need something as soon as possible, a same day denture is a great solution to make sure you’re not left without teeth. At your consultation, one of our dentists can talk you through both options and help you decide.

What to Expect After Getting Same Day Dentures

It is common that there will be a period of adjustment when it comes to using a new denture. Here are a few considerations to keep in mind:

  • There may be minor adjustments required because of the healing process of your gums and because of the reduction in swelling, particularly after a tooth extraction. In the first few weeks after the procedure, we can do any necessary relining and adjustments on the denture to ensure comfort.
  • Some bone resorption is natural in the first year following the loss of a tooth. This will affect how well the denture sits so regular check-ups are key.
  • Soft foods are recommended in the first few days.
