What is CEREC?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It is a specialized dental technology using CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/manufacturing) to create high-quality, tooth-colored ceramic restorations—such as crowns, inlays, onlays, and veneers—in a single visit. CEREC was first introduced in dentistry in 1986 and over the past 40 years it has improved immensely. CEREC has gradually become popular with dental practices that are looking for high quality restorations for their patients.
We use the CEREC system to design, mill and fit a ceramic crown, inlay or onlay in just one visit. CEREC ceramic Inlays and onlays are usually much stronger than traditional composite fillings and last longer and are tooth coloured.
CEREC ceramic onlays also reinforce weak thin tooth cusps by covering them (known as cuspal coverage). This reduces the risk of tooth fracture which can happen with large composite white fillings in root filled teeth.
If a premolar or molar is root filled, it is very important that cuspal coverage onlay or crown restorations are placed soon after root canal treatment as risk of fracture is 6 times higher for those teeth left with large composite white fillings after root canal treatment.
