A woman who was left in agony for weeks after her dental treatment was botched has won an out-of-court settlement of £8,750 from a dentist who also treated celebrities from reality TV show The Only Way Is Essex, including Amy Childs and Joey Essex.
Helena Reed, 40, visited Dr Jas Singh and Dr Kiran Hanji at their London clinic in March 2009 to treat a twisted tooth; after a bridge, veneers, and a porcelain crown were fitted she began to have numerous problems. After the bridge broke Helena developed an infection and this caused her face to swell up; she also lost over a stone in weight throughout the ordeal.
Helena told The London Evening Standard ‘It looked like I’d done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson… It was horrendous. They said the treatment would be pain-free treatment but giving birth to my daughter was easier. I feel I’ve been let down badly and now have more treatment ahead because of the mistakes made.’
After paying £5,500 for the cosmetic work and suffering terrible results, Mrs Reed decided to seek treatment elsewhere for the infection and underwent several root canals to deal with the infection; she also decided to pursue a claim with the help of the Dental Law Partnership, which suggested that Dr Singh and Dr Hanji failed in a duty of care towards their patient. Although there was an out-of-court settlement, both dentists deny any liability. Dr Hanji has since left the practice to open his own clinic.
