Nanoparticles are helping to improve dental surgery according to the latest study at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. The research has discovered that nanoparticles containing enzymes are effective in undertaking basic dental surgeries while protecting healthy tissue.
Lead researcher, Avi Schroeder, spoke to Phys.org about the new findings. “The existing scalpel cannot distinguish between healthy and diseased tissue. However, enzymes can. Proteolytic enzymes are tuned to degrade specific tissues, without harming other healthy tissues. We believe that in the future surgeries must be more accurate, with less damage to healthy tissues.”
There were also positive findings in relation to orthodontics. The tests showed that prior treatment with the nanoparticles improved many areas within the orthodontic process. These included better alignment during the treatment, less pain and discomfort, and less tooth relapse afterward. Potentially, this nanotechnology could dramatically improve a patient’s experience when undergoing teeth straightening. An added bonus is the body uses natural enzymes throughout the process. It is unsure at this time if, or when, this process will be available to the public.
