Jamie Oliver has been well documented in his war on unhealthy foods over the years, with shows such as, Jamie’s School Dinners and Jamie’s Dream School. The celebrity chef is no stranger to promoting a balanced diet with his quick and healthy meals to fit any budget.
Jamie’s most recent pursuits have seen him waging a war on Sugar. Back in June 2015, the straight-talking chef arranged a meeting with, the then prime minister David Cameron, to propose a tax on drink’s companies such as, Coca Cola and Pepsi, due to the high sugar content of their products. As part of Jamie’s investigation into the effects of sugar he filmed a documentary entitled, Sugar Rush, which was screen in September 2015. Part of the filming saw a five-year-old boy having multiple teeth extracted, due to the consumption of too many sugary drinks.
Against all odds, the celebrity chef was heard loud and clear after continued campaigns, filming and social media posts. Back in March, the now ex chancellor George Osbourne, put forward legislation to impose a sugar tax that would raise hundreds of millions a year in revenue. Following the Brexit vote, Teresa May stepped in as prime minister and backed the tax proposal, singling out Jamie as a key advocate and supporter. Last week the government put forward a draft of the legislation that will be voted on next year. This could be excellent news for the dental community, as sugar is one of the biggest causes of tooth decay, especially in children and young people.
