wisdom tooth operculum

Do you suffer from an infected wisdom tooth?

Sometimes a wisdom tooth problem resolves by itself. An infected wisdom tooth issue may not go away by itself. It may fade for a while… then comes back again.

So what’s actually causing it?

There usually isn’t enough space in the back of your jaw for your wisdom tooth to fully come through and erupt.

So the wisdom tooth may erupt partially, or erupt at an angle, and a bit of gum (operculum) sits over it.

That little gap is the problem.

Food gets stuck in there. Bacteria builds up. The gum gets irritated. Then infected.

We call this problem Pericoronitis, which is usually due a spot at the back of your mouth that’s really hard to keep clean, and the area keeps flaring up.

What does an infected wisdom tooth feel like

People describe it in very similar ways:

  • A dull ache that slowly turns into proper pain
  • Pain when chewing on that side
  • Jaw feeling tight or a bit swollen
  • A bad taste that won’t shift

Sometimes the pain even travels—you might feel referred pain in your ear or throat.

Why it doesn’t just settle properly

This is the bit that catches people out.

The pain might calm down after a few days or weeks… but the setup and anatomy hasn’t changed.

That awkward impacted wisdom tooth is still there.

That hard-to-clean gap is still there.

So it builds up again.

That’s why people say:
“It comes and goes.”

Until eventually, the pain becomes more prolonged.

When you should stop waiting

If its the first time you have suffered these symptoms, you might wish to improve your cleaning and wait.

But if you notice:

  • A facial or jaw swelling
  • Struggling to open your mouth fully or swallowing
  • Pain getting worse, not better
  • Feeling a bit unwell with it

That’s your cue to get it looked at.

What actually helps

When you come in, we’re not overcomplicating anything.

First goal: get you out of pain.

We’ll check the tooth properly, clean the area, and calm things down.

Then we’ll talk through what makes sense next.

Sometimes it’s just managing it.

Sometimes antibiotics are needed which we can dispense for you.

And quite often – if it keeps happening – the best fix is taking the wisdom tooth out so it stops coming back.

Realistically… do most people end up removing the wisdom tooth?

If it’s a one-off, maybe you could try the wait and see approach.

If the wisdom tooth problem has repeated a few times?
Yeah – wisdom tooth removal is usually what actually solves it.

What Should you do first for an infected wisdom tooth:

If you’re just trying to get through today:

  • Warm saltwater rinses help a bit
  • Try not to chew on that side
  • Take some painkillers like Ibuprofen if you can

It’ll take the edge off – but it’s temporary.
