There is a growing trend in the UK for dental hygienists to set up on their own away from traditional emergency dentistry surgeries, it has been revealed.

Ifp.com reported dental hygienist Whitney Sanders has branched out from working at her local dentistry surgery to set up her own business offering dental hygiene advice and treatments.

Ms Sanders commented: “People like the service I provide. I’m not in any rush. I take as much time as they need and answer questions. They like that.”

She added the flexibility of working outside a dentist’s office means she can see more patients and help improve dental hygiene in her area.

Elsewhere, the Southern Daily Echo recently reported a new dental surgery is set to open in Winchester next year, which could help provide emergency dentistry services for up to 9,500 local residents.

Natalie Jones, lead commissioning manager of primary care dental services for NHS Hampshire, noted £15 million has been set aside for the launch of this new centre.
