Those who want to avoid making an emergency dentistry trip on Halloween have been given some advice.
Parents often find their children overdo it on the sweets on October 31st – but there are ways to minimise the damage this can cause.
Dr Margaret Mitchell is the owner of Mitchell Dental Spa in Chicago and is reported on eMax Health as saying that brushing teeth immediately after eating candy may help. This is particularly effective when kids eat sticky or gooey sweets, she explained.
However, caramel, gummy bears and toffee should be avoided. Children might also benefit from professional sealants inserted prior to Halloween.
After eating, certain chewing gums can be effective in preventing tooth decay.
Although it is usually youngsters trick or treating on this holiday, adults would do well to follow the same advice.
NHS statistics show that tooth decay is the biggest widespread problem affecting UK health – over half of the country’s adults have at least one unsound or decayed tooth.
