Eating more tuna could help you to beat emergency dentistry. Eating more fish oils and Omega-3 fatty acids could help dental patients to prevent emergency dentistry, new research has discovered.

The US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey looked at more than 9,000 people and monitored their intake of dietary docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in foods such as fish oil.

Scientists from Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health who examined the results found that people who consumed the highest levels of DHA were 20 per cent less likely to develop periodontitis.

Asghar Z Naqvi, one of the lead researchers, said this could be a significant discovery.

"A dietary therapy, if effective, might be a less expensive and safer method for the prevention and treatment of periodontitis," he pointed out.

Periodontitis is the collective name for a set of inflammatory diseases that affect the gums. If not treated, they can affect the bones which hold in the teeth, eventually causing them to drop out.
