What to expect during your endodontic appointment
If you have been referred for endodontic treatment at Pearl Dental Clinic, here is a step-by-step look at the journey to a pain-free smile:
1. The Consultation and digital imaging
We begin with a thorough examination. Using state-of-the-art digital X-rays and, in some cases, 3D imaging (CBCT scans), we can see the intricate, microscopic map of your root canals. Every tooth is different; some have two canals, while others may have four or five.
2. Ensuring your comfort
Before the procedure begins, the tooth is thoroughly numbed with local anaesthetic. Modern techniques mean that most patients report the sensation is no different than getting a standard filling. Our goal is to ensure you are completely relaxed throughout.
3. Precision cleaning
Once you are comfortable, the endodontist makes a small opening in the crown of the tooth. Using a high-powered dental microscope, they find the tiny canals and remove the infected pulp. The area is then meticulously cleaned and shaped using specialised, flexible instruments.
4. Sealing the tooth
After the canals are cleaned and disinfected, they are filled with a biocompatible material (usually gutta-percha) and sealed with an adhesive cement. This prevents bacteria from re-entering the space.
5. Restoration
In most cases, a tooth that has had a root canal will eventually need a crown. This protects the tooth from fracturing and restores it to full function.
