What are Essix Retainers?
Essix retainers are clear, plastic retainers that are custom-made to fit the shape of your teeth. They are a popular alternative to traditional wire and acrylic retainers, as they are virtually invisible and provide a comfortable fit. Essix retainers are made from a thermoplastic material that is durable and resistant to discoloration. They are also easy to clean and maintain, making them a convenient option for busy individuals.
How Do Essix Retainers Work?
Essix retainers work by holding your teeth in place after orthodontic treatment. The retainer is custom-made to fit your teeth, ensuring a secure and comfortable fit. The retainers gently apply pressure to your teeth, preventing them from shifting back to their original position. Over time, the retainer will help to reinforce the new position of your teeth, helping to maintain the results of your orthodontic treatment.

What is the process for getting Retainers
We take digital 3d photographic scans of your teeth and the dental laboratory will produce your custom made 3d printed essix retainers within 1-2 weeks. You can also opt to go for Vivera retainers instead. Vivera retainers are proprietary Invisalign retainers that look similar to Essix retainers but come in sets of three upper and lower retainers. Essix retainers come in single set of upper and lower retainers but you can order more than one set of them if you wish.
Proper Care and Maintenance of Retainers
Proper care and maintenance of your retainer is crucial to ensuring its longevity and effectiveness. Here are some tips to help you keep your retainer in top condition:
- Clean your retainer regularly: Clean your retainer at least once a day using toothbrush and toothpaste. Avoid using hot water or boiling your retainer, as this can damage the material. Alternatively you could use a product such as Retainer Brite to keep your retainers clean.
- Store your retainer properly: When you’re not wearing your retainer, store it in a safe and secure place such as in the retainer box. Avoid exposing your retainer to extreme heat or cold, as this can cause it to warp or crack.
- Replace your retainer regularly: Over time, your retainer may become worn or damaged, affecting its effectiveness. Replace your retainer as directed by your orthodontist to ensure that it continues to work as intended.
When to Wear Your Retainers
It is recommended to wear your retainers as directed by our Invisalign dentist or orthodontist. Most orthodontists will advise you to wear your retainer full-time for the first 7 months after orthodontic treatment is completed and then every night thereafter.
