The invention of enamel repairing gel may mean the need for fillings is eradicated in the future. Unfortunately, the enamel on the teeth cannot repair itself naturally. Therefore, dental fillings are necessary to restore and protect teeth that have become damaged or suffered decay. However, Ruikang Tang, and colleagues, of the Zhejiang University in China have created a specially formulated gel which contains the same minerals as the tooth’s natural enamel. This combination helps to stimulate natural regrowth and repair.
This type of treatment has been attempted before but was not successful due to the size of the particles contained in the mixture. The new gel contains much smaller particles that help them to attach more easily to the teeth. Tang’s team are currently testing the mixture to ensure that it is safe and also to find out whether it works effectively in the mouth. Especially when people are performing everyday tasks such as eating and drinking. If this gel is successful then it will be a revolutionary breakthrough. However, for now, the traditional filling reigns. Watch this space!
