People who want to avoid emergency dentistry could be interested to hear the launch of National Smile Month is today (May 12th).
With industry experts gathering at the opening ceremony in the Houses of Parliament, people have been urged to get involved in the celebrations.
Aiming to increase the public's awareness of oral hygiene, the campaign's launch will include speeches from figureheads in the dental industry.
Chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) Dr Nigel Carter expressed hope that the campaign will put a smile back on people's faces.
Dr Carter acknowledged the importance of smiling and the effect it can have on all areas of a person's life.
He said: "It can shape our lives, our relationships and careers and be a very powerful show of emotion, yet not everyone has the confidence to do so."
The BDHF advises people to increase their awareness of the symptoms of gum disease in a bid to avoid needing emergency dentistry.
Swollen and inflamed gums as well as bleeding while brushing are all symptoms which could be linked to the condition.
