Dental Biopsy

Dental biopsy is performed to remove a very small sample of abnormal tissue from the mouth. This type of dental biopsy is called an incisional biopsy. The biopsy sample will then be sent off to a laboratory to have its tissue content analysed under a microscope by a pathologist so that a diagnosis could be made. Alternatively, the biopsy may be undertaken to remove a lump or area completely. This type of dental biopsy is called an excisional biopsy.

A patient may need a biopsy if:

  • A lesion has been present for more than two weeks.
  • Persistent ulcers have formed on the gum or other soft tissue.
  • A jaw bone cyst has formed and detected on X-rays taken.
  • Unusual swelling develops and does not subside.
  • White or red patches have formed and persisted for over two weeks.

What to expect from a biopsy

The majority of the time a biopsy will be completed under local anaesthetic. This ensures that the area is numb so that the patient will not experience any pain or discomfort during the procedure. IV sedation is also available for patients who maybe anxious. The way the tissue is removed will depend on what type of biopsy is required. Once the biopsy has been taken a patient may require minimal stitching to close the area. Usually, dissolvable stitches are used which should disappear after about two weeks.

Aftercare

As with any procedure that requires anaesthetic it is important not to bite or chew until the numbing effects have worn off completely. This ensures that no damage occurs while the patient is unable to feel their soft tissue. Also, to avoid bleeding, refrain from rinsing or spitting on the day of the procedure. Clean your teeth as normal, but do not brush the biopsied region for 5 days. Use salt water mouth-rinses twice a day for 5 days.
