People who have cosmetic dentistry to take out their wisdom teeth could benefit from better oral hygiene and fewer dental complaints in the future, it has been claimed.
American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons chair Louis Rafetto told TheraBreath.com that even if wisdom teeth are not causing problems right away, they may begin to after a few years.
"The fact is, extraction is much easier in young adults and research consistently shows that it is a simple way of improving both dental and overall health," he added.
Mr Rafetto explained that because wisdom teeth are more difficult to clean, they may cause more bacteria in the mouth, while they can also damage healthy teeth as they erupt.
The expert added that if cosmetic dentistry to remove wisdom teeth is not an option, patients should spend more time brushing and flossing if they want to avoid emergency dentistry.
According to the British Dental Health Foundation, wisdom teeth usually erupt between the ages of 17 and 25.
