To aid root canal recovery there are a number of steps that you can take. Often patients feel minimum discomfort afterward, however, there are still things that you can do to help look after your tooth.
Root canal recovery process
Most people find that they can return to their normal routine the same day, if not the next. However, there are still things to be mindful of. Here are some tips and advice you can follow to help make your root canal recovery success.
- Following the root canal treatment, the tooth may feel sensitive. This is due to inflammation of the tissue. If this is the case then the discomfort can be controlled by using over the counter pain relief, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, as long as you are normally able to take this kind of medication. Do not give aspirin to children under the age of sixteen.
- Once your dentist is happy that the infection is completely eradicated they may decide to fit a dental crown to the tooth. This is to strengthen and protect the root treated tooth. While you are waiting for this appointment be careful not to apply too much pressure to the tooth and consider eating on the opposite side. The less stress that is put on the tooth and the temporary filling the better.
- Maintain a good oral hygiene routine. This includes brushing twice a day and using dental floss and mouthwash daily.
- Avoid smoking after having a root canal treatment. Smoking is toxic and can cause complications for the teeth and gums.
