A dentist from Bourton is making preparations to treat the thousands of athletes that are descending on Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games this month; Dr Ian Speechley, of Riverside Dental Practice, was selected from a talent pool of dental professionals who volunteered to help out at the 2014 games.
Dr Speechley will be based at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre for the duration of the games, as part of the ‘Field of play medical team’, to help athletes with any dental problems that they might have. Primarily, the dentist will be treating athletes taking part in combat sports, such as boxing and judo, but also gymnastics and netball.
Dr Speechley told the Cotswold Journal that he was ‘really thankful to have been selected to be part of the Commonwealth Games this year.’ He added that he is a sports fan and sees this as ‘a great opportunity’ to combine his love of sports with his day job. He also said that he has been enjoying getting to know the other volunteers, dubbed ‘Clyde-siders’, who he ‘can’t wait to work with in July.’ Finally, Dr Speechley told the paper that he is ‘proud to be a part of something that will leave a lasting legacy in Glasgow.’
