Recently there has been a big push for schools to go sugar free according to BBC News. A group of dental surgeons from around the country are calling to the government to encourage schools to provide children with sugar free meals and drinks. The proposed initiative comes due to the soaring rates of tooth decay in children.
Professor Michael Escudier of the Royal College of Surgeons of England spoke of his concerns. “It is incredibly worrying that levels of tooth decay among children in England remain so high – especially when you consider that it is almost entirely preventable through simple steps, such as brushing twice a day with appropriate-strength fluoride toothpaste, visiting the dentist regularly, and reducing sugar consumption.”
There have also been other recommendations for tackling this important issue. These include reducing the amount of sugar in baby foods as well as restricting advertising for sugar-rich sweets and treats. Some dentists have also got on board. They have expressed that they would like to see advice given to parents and carers on providing healthy packed lunches. If this initiative gathers momentum it could certainly contribute to a reduction in childhood tooth decay.
