People intending to eat, drink and be merry this Christmas have been warned not to indulge in too much sugar, unless they want to be having emergency dentistry in the new year.
Dentistry.co.uk said that goodies such as candy canes, Christmas pudding, trifle, eggnog and mince pies are full of sugar, which could result in decay unless measures are taken to avoid it.
Firstly, the news source recommended not snacking between meals where at all possible, as this will limit the time the teeth are under attack from acids.
In addition, it suggested swapping sugary treats for sugar-free items such as xylitol chewing gum to prevent plaque build-up.
Finally, if eating sweet things is unavoidable, the dental website said it may be a good idea to eat an alkaline food such as cheese afterwards to neutralise acids.
Earlier this month, Lucy Elkins of the Daily Mail warned people hoping to avoid emergency dentistry that they should wait 30 minutes after eating sweet foods before brushing their teeth, as it could scrub the enamel away otherwise.
