A retired dentist aged 95 has broken the world record in his age category for the 200m, shaving an impressive two seconds off the previous time. Dr Charles Eugstar only took up athletics ten years ago but still managed to cross the line at Lee Valley Athletics Centre on Saturday in a time of 55.48 seconds.
Charles, a former London dentist who now lives in Switzerland, could hardly believe his own achievement and posted an elated status update on Facebook, saying ‘I have just broken the M95 World Record at 200m indoors! 55.48 seconds – I’m over the moon… Thank you to everyone who has helped me achieve this.’
A video of the record-breaking run was posted online by the Silver Grey Sports Club, a local club that supports athletics for the over-50’s, and it showed Dr Eugstar setting a British record for the 60m alongside his world record. Charles later said that ‘it proves you can set challenges and goals at any age and achieve them.’ The 95-year-old’s coach, Sylvia Gattiker, was rightly proud of his achievement, calling it ‘fantastic’.
