Why dental cleaning matters

Even with good brushing, plaque builds up and hardens into tartar.

A professional clean helps to:

  • remove plaque and tartar
  • reduce bleeding gums
  • improve bad breath
  • lift surface stains
  • protect long-term gum health

Untreated inflamed gums can lead to reversible gum disease (gingivitis) and eventually irreversible gum disease (periodontitis). Periodontitis is much more complicated to treat than gingivitis, so its worth preventing gum disease progressing early on. If you do develop the more advanced irreversible gum disease you may need to see the Periodontist (gum specialist) for full gum assessment and deep cleaning.

What happens during your appointment?

Simple and straightforward:

  1. Check-up – gums, plaque and buildup assessed
  2. Deep clean – plaque and tartar removed
  3. Polish – teeth smoothed, stain reduced and teeth polished
  4. Advice – we provide small tips that make a big difference to keeping your teeth clean going forward

What is Airflow cleaning?

Airflow (Guided Biofilm Therapy) uses air, warm water and powder to gently clean teeth.

It is ideal for:

  • tea, coffee or smoking stains
  • sensitive teeth
  • veneers, crowns, braces, retainers or implants

Most patients find guided biofilm therapy more comfortable and more effective than traditional teeth cleaning.

Does GBT hurt?

Usually not. Most patients find guided biofilm therapy to be quick and comfortable.
If your gums are sensitive, we adjust everything to keep you at ease. If necessary, we can also provide local anaesthetic to numb your gums and stop any pain immediately.

How often should you have teeth cleaning?

  • Every 6 months → Suitable for most patients
  • Every 3–4 months → Recommended for patients with gum issues or heavy frequent buildup of calculus (tartar) or those patients who suffer from gum disease

We will tailor a plan to meet your individual needs.

You will also need to brush, floss your teeth and use interdental brushes twice daily.
