impacted wisdom tooth

When a wisdom tooth partially comes through and is still partially covered by gum, food and bacteria can trap between the gum and the wisdom tooth which can be very difficult to clean. As a result, the overlying gum (known as the operculum) can become inflamed and the wisdom tooth can decay.

How to prevent wisdom tooth soreness

Its very important to maintain excellent oral hygiene by brushing twice a day, flossing and using a single tufted brush to clean between the wisdom tooth and gum overlying it. Its also very important to visit the hygienist at least twice a year and the dentist once a year.

wisdom tooth swelling

Quick relief (what works right now)

1. Cold compress (very underrated)

  • Hold an ice pack on the outside of your cheek
  • 10–15 mins on, 10 mins off
  • Helps reduce both pain and swelling

2. Warm saltwater rinses

  • ½ teaspoon salt in warm water
  • Rinse gently 2–3 times a day
  • Reduces inflammation and keeps bacteria down
ibuprofen

3. Painkillers (first-line)

  • Ibuprofen → best for reducing inflammation
  • Paracetamol → can be combined with ibuprofen
  • Always follow UK dosing guidelines

4. Clove oil (short-term numbing)

  • Dab a tiny amount on the gum
  • Works as a natural anaesthetic
  • Don’t overuse — it can irritate tissue

If the gum is inflamed (very common)

This is often called Pericoronitis — where a flap of gum traps food and bacteria between itself and the wisdom tooth.

What helps most when the gum is inflammed:

  • Careful cleaning around the area (soft brush or interdental brush)
  • Saltwater rinses (key)
  • Antibacterial mouthwash (like chlorhexidine mouthwash, used twice a day for one week. dont use it for longer, as it can stain your teeth)
  • Seeing the hygienist for guided biofilm therapyto painlessly clean away the bacteria trapped under the gum

What to avoid (people do this a lot)

  • Constantly poking the area → makes inflammation worse
  • Very hot drinks → can increase throbbing
  • Ignoring it if swelling is increasing

When it’s NOT ‘just soreness’

You should get it checked quickly if you notice:

  • Swelling spreading to cheek or jaw
  • Difficulty opening your mouth or swallowing
  • Bad taste / pus in your mouth
  • Fever and high body temperature

That can mean infection — and it won’t settle down on its own. Our on-call emergency dentist is available 365 days a year, to assess and treat your infection appropriately.

wisdom tooth extraction

The definitive solution

If your wisdom tooth is:

  • Partially erupted
  • Trapping food repeatedly
  • Causing repeated pain and swelling

The wisdom tooth soreness sometimes keeps coming back until it’s treated. In such cases we offer a same day wisdom tooth removal service provided by our very experienced dentists and oral surgeon. We also offer Intra-Venous dental sedation for those patients who prefer to be less aware of the wisdom tooth extraction procedure.
