A woman from Portsmouth has been left with dental damage after biting into a Greggs breakfast bap and finding a metal screw inside the teacake. Tiffany Heeley says that her tooth has been broken and she cannot afford to get it fixed; the 26-year-old was sharing a sandwich with her daughter when she bit down into the screw and chipped the tooth. The bap was bought from a Greggs store in Paulsgrove, Portsmouth.
Ms Heeley told Mailonline that she ‘felt something break’ when she bit into the bap so she spat the food out and found the screw in part of a sausage. She said ‘Luckily I took that bite and not her [daughter Lois] because she could have choked on it or, even worse, caused her internal injuries.’ Ms Heeley kept the screw and the bap and was offered vouchers as compensation after she complained to Greggs – she turned them down.
A spokesman for the company said ‘We’re sorry it’s taken time to respond to our customer but we had to investigate every possibility after we received this complaint.’ He went on to say that the products on sale undergo ‘rigorous quality and control checks including metal detectors’ before they are sent out to the shops.’ According to the statement, where the screw came from ‘remains a mystery’ as all of the screws used in the company’s machinery are still intact. Greggs have apologised to Ms Heeley and they are conducting a full review to find out how the incident occurred.
