treatment for gum abscessesIt is important to seek treatment for gum abscesses immediately. An abscess can develop on any part of the body, however, in the mouth, there are two types. There are either gum related abscesses or tooth related abscesses. Any patients who are concerned that they may have either of these must seek emergency dental treatment to ensure they do not become worse.

What is a gum abscess?

A gum abscess is known as a periodontal abscess. These are caused due to infection and are often the result of bacteria or food becoming trapped in between the gum and the tooth. An abscess is a swelling that fills with pus and will need immediate dental treatment. People can sometimes underestimate the potential seriousness of an abscess. The infection can spread to other parts of the body causing complications. In extreme situations, it can also cause blood poisoning and death.

Treatment For Gum Abscesses

A gum abscess will not go away on its own and will, therefore, need professional treatment. Often people will seek emergency treatment due to the sheer pain that is caused by an abscess. The treatment will require draining the build up of pus which will relieve the pain. A dentist will then prescribe antibiotics to fight off the remaining infection. Tooth shaping may also be needed if a gap has formed between the gum and the tooth. If this gap is not addressed then further bacteria can gather in the crevasse and cause the infection to come back.
