Thumb-sucking 'can damage teeth'Thumb-sucking can disrupt the alignment of children’s teeth, one industry commentator has warned, which may mean they could later need cosmetic dentistry.

Writing for the website Helium, Unwirklich VinZant advised parents how to wean youngsters from the habit.

Between the ages of two and four is when adults need to begin teaching their offspring that it is no longer acceptable, she explained.

Rewarding positive behaviour using a chart monitoring their progress was suggested as a good method, or placing plasters and solutions that taste bitter on the thumb can help discourage them.

The writer also recommended talking to the child so they understand why they should not be doing it and asking a dentist to show them the consequences if they do.

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, recently warned people not to eat too much yoghurt as many are very high in sugar, which can increase tooth decay.ADNFCR-2621-ID-19858961-ADNFCR
