Sugar-free gum could help stop cavities developing

Sugar-free gum could help stop cavities developing, according to researchers at Kings College London. It is no secret that chewing may help maintain dental health. However, a new research review shows it could be more effective than first thought. The findings showed that chewing sugar-free gum reduced the development of cavities by twenty-eight percent.

Professor Avijit Banerjee in the Cariology & Operative Dentistry department and lead author of the paper was quoted as saying. “Both the stimulation of saliva which can act as a natural barrier to protect teeth, and the mechanical plaque control that results from the act of chewing, can contribute to the prevention of dental caries. No recent conclusive evidence existed prior to this review that showed the relationship between slowing the development of caries and chewing sugar-free gum.”

Tooth decay is one of the biggest health issues affecting adults and children in the UK. These findings could be great news. However, it is worth noting that this cannot be a substitute for brushing, flossing, and rinsing. This method is unlikely to work in isolation. Therefore, implementing it as part of a dental routine could potentially contribute to better oral health.
