Parents keen to promote their children's dental health may want to take them to the dentist as early on as possible to avoid the need for emergency dentistry later in life.
This is according to Dr Peter Nieman, who says in response to a reader's letter published in the Globe and Mail that many paediatric dentists insist on seeing children as soon as they get their first tooth.
He notes that children's doctors are often the first to spot signs of cavities and other dental health problems in young ones, making it important to take kids to the dentist as early as possible.
"Bottle caries, which happens when a child falls asleep with a bottle in the mouth, is still far too common," Dr Nieman added.
The comments come after a recent study by the Dental Epidemiology Programme found that one-third of children suffer from problems such as tooth decay.
