A potential new intervention that could prevent child tooth decay has been developed by Queen Mary’s University staff and students. Due to childhood tooth decay being at an all-time high, it was felt the study would be useful. Children in the most deprived areas have around double the amount of decay as children from lesser deprived areas. Therefore, the study aimed to bridge the gap.
In response to this, the university study developed the idea of communicating with parents in a different way. Lead researcher, Professor Cynthia Pine, discussed the study. “This trial is important because we found that if we change how we talk to parents about prevention, their children go on to develop many fewer cavities. The key is helping parents to choose one or two behaviours they feel they can change for their child, rather than us telling parents what to do, that makes the difference.”
The study was trialled in 12 centre across the UK. The findings showed the initiative was very successful in lowering the percentages of childhood decay and also in educating parents. The team is in the process of developing a training course to disseminate the information further.
