Dental problems in children should be addressed immediately to prevent the need for emergency dentistry, according to one expert.
Dr John Liu, president of the American Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (AAPD), stressed that looking after a youngster’s first teeth is vital, Boston.com reports.
He said: “Even though these are only baby teeth and will eventually fall out, it is important for good overall health to have good oral health.”
Speaking to a dentist will help to ensure the child understands about oral hygiene and may avoid them developing tooth decay, Dr Liu added.
Parents are advised by the AAPD to take their offspring for a dental check up when their teeth begin to appear and preferably before their first birthday, the publication noted.
The South Minnesota Independent recently commented that many adults are unaware of the emphasis that should be placed on looking after children’s teeth.
