After teeth whitening, especially for the first 24-48 hours, it is imperative that you follow certain advice. Failing to do so could actually stain your teeth more than they were before the treatment. This is due to the teeth becoming very porous after whitening. When the teeth are porous they are extremely susceptible to staining and discolouration. Therefore, the following advice is available to help preserve your beautiful white teeth for as long as possible.
- Drink water or clear/white liquids. If it is not possible to solely drink clear liquids then using a straw will limit the contact that the liquid has with the teeth.
- Do not eat strongly coloured foods, instead try to eat only colourless foods, such as chicken, rice, noodles, potatoes, pasta etc.
- Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing (you may also benefit from using a desensitising toothpaste if your teeth are feeling a little sensitive). If they are sensitive do not worry, it usually passes after a day or two.
- Do not smoke after teeth whitening as this can cause the teeth to yellow and discolour.
