A player for the Pittsburgh Penguins suffered some dental trauma during a game this week, but instead of throwing in the towel he simply pulled out his own tooth so that he could continue the game.
Right winger Pascal Dupuis took some time-out on the bench after he was accidentally hit in the face with another players stick, but he was determined not to miss out on the rest of the game. Rather than waiting to consult with a dentist, Dupuis spoke to his trainer, who asked him if he would like to pull the damaged tooth out to make sure he didn’t swallow it. Dupuis quickly obliged and even tried to pull out another broken tooth that was attached to a bridge.
Fellow Penguin Sidney Crosby told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he had not seen someone pull out their own tooth many times before, adding that he told his teammate ‘Hurry up, you’re grossing me out. Just get rid of it.’ He went on to describe the damage in gory detail, saying that the broken tooth ‘was part of a bridge, so I don’t think it hurt that much but I saw a steel rod in this tooth when it came out.’
Seemingly none the worse for his impromptu extraction, Dupuis returned to the ice and helped his team to a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins.
