People should consume more vitamin C in a bid to strengthen gums and reduce the risk of emergency dentistry, an expert has claimed.
Dr Frank Eggleston has stressed the importance of a nutritious diet in maintaining healthy gums, the South Bend Tribune reports.
Graduating from dental school at Baylor University, Dr Eggleston advised people to eat beneficial foods to encourage growth and repair in the mouth.
Consuming more calcium is also recommended to rebuild teeth and bones in the face, as well as eating fruit and vegetables.
Dr Eggleston said: "Good nutrition helps you build a healthier mouth from the inside out – healthier bone, healthier nerves and healthier gum tissue."
Colgate recommends people brush their teeth twice a day using a toothpaste that will help reduce plaque to ensure gums remain as healthy as possible.
The organisation advises the public to pay close attention to the area where the tooth meets the gum when brushing to avoid bleeding and the build up of decay.
