An Italian dentist has been banned from emergency dentistry and similar procedures.Patients may wish to take care where they choose to have emergency dentistry and other procedures carried out after a dentist in Dumfries was suspended.

Italian Onofrio Brancato, who practised at DADDS in the Scottish town, was banned from carrying out dental care until November 2010 under new legislation.

He qualified as a dentist in Bologna in 1985, but was told that his English is not classed as good enough to deal appropriately with patients.

A spokesperson for the local health authority said his status will now be under review until November, when a further decision is made.

In June, Dumfries and Galloway Council also prosecuted dentist Egidijus Svirplis from the same surgery for “deficient professional performance”.

Meanwhile, across the pond last week, Texan dentist Julio de la Fuente was arrested for carrying out procedures without a valid licence.

He had already been asked to cease practising after claiming to possess qualifications he had not obtained.
