A clinical trial, shared by Medical News Bulletin, has revealed more evidence that dermal fillers are seen as an effective treatment for acne scars. Acne (also known as acne vulgatis) affects around eighty percent of adolescents. Subsequently, this often means prominent scarring and loss of confidence and self-esteem. During the study, a range of dermal fillers were reviewed. One of which was the temporary filler, hyaluronic acid. This type of filler is commonly used by celebrities and the general public to add volume to the face and lips. However, the review suggests that hyaluronic acid can also be very effective at smoothing and softening acne scars, and is in fact underutilised.
Current developments are aiming towards dermatologists being able to prescribe dermal fillers as part of their treatment plans. This is an exciting and innovative step towards minimising the effects of acne. A welcome development for many that suffer from it. Dermal fillers may also be available for topical administering in the future. Although, this treatment may need to be coupled with a laser procedure.
