When teeth discolour people may want to consider teeth whitening. For most, this is a straightforward process, however, teeth whitening for sensitive teeth needs a little more consideration to ensure that the patient does not experience any further discomfort. There are a number of things that can be done to minimise the discomfort and safeguard the teeth from damage.
Teeth Whitening For Sensitive Teeth
Many patients suffering from sensitive teeth may still be eligible for teeth whitening procedures if certain precautions are taken before, during, and after the process. It is no secret that teeth whitening can cause temporary sensitivity for a day or two. However, for people with sensitive teeth, this is only likely to heighten their discomfort. Therefore, our experienced cosmetic dentists have a few tricks up their sleeves to help avoid this:
- The teeth can be coated with a desensitising varnish before the treatment takes place.
- The strength of the bleach can be reduced to be gentler on the teeth.
- Use a desensitising toothpaste after the procedure to reduce any sensitivity.
- Brush teeth in a very gentle manner and only use a soft bristled brush.
- Avoid hot or cold foods and drinks for at least a couple of days after whitening.

In some cases, if the teeth are highly sensitive and it is deemed detrimental, a dentist will not perform the treatment. This is for the patient’s own safety and wellbeing as it could cause the pain to intensify and damage the exposed dentine. If this is the case do not attempt to whiten your teeth using an over the counter product either as this could also cause issues. If teeth whitening is not an option then it may be possible that dental veneers are. A cosmetic dentist would need to examine your teeth to determine this.
