A woman in London has had her wisdom tooth removed without any anaesthetic to numb the pain; Sharon Waxkirsh chose instead to undergo the procedure using only hypnosis. As well as the extraction, Sharon had two incisions and one stitch during the operation, but said she felt nothing after putting herself into a trance at the start of the appointment. She also says she was able to stop any bleeding, swelling, or bruising afterwards.
Speaking to MailOnline, she said that she had hypnotised herself and did not feel any discomfort. She told the publication ‘It didn’t ever become painful, not once, and I didn’t have any blood loss at all.’ Explaining how effective the method is at blocking pain, Sharon said ‘The beauty of it is that it allows you to have complete control over your body and you lose that when you have an anaesthetic. I just decided to completely relax my body – it is all about getting in the zone.’
Sharon also believes that this could benefit the NHS as well as other patients; she explained that ‘It has the potential to save the NHS millions of pounds every year and get people out of hospital much quicker than with conventional recovery programmes. Hypnosis can over-ride the chemicals in the brain that cause us fear and tension. It can also allow us to subdue pain and let the body concentrate on healing itself.’
