A Cambridge shopper was enjoying her lunch when she bit into a lump of Wensleydale Jervaulx Blueat and found a human tooth in the cheese; the product was purchased from a branch of Sainsbury’s and the supermarket chain are looking into the error.

Jane Betts, 42, bit into the cheese and realised that a tooth had fallen to the floor; she first checked that it was not one of her own teeth and then realised that the tooth had fallen out of the cheese rather than her own mouth. Mrs Betts later took the tooth to a dentist, where it was confirmed to be a human tooth.

Mrs Betts said that she found the incident ‘extremely disturbing’ and had first thought that the tooth was her own because she had only been to the dentist for treatment the day before. She said that she was ‘completely disgusted to find that it was in fact someone else’s [tooth]. I was very confused for several minutes as I searched my mouth and all my teeth looking for where the piece had come off.’ She then added that the experience had made her ‘feel sick’ and described it as ‘bizarre and truly horrible.’

The tooth has been handed over to the environmental health team at Cambridge City Council for investigation. A spokesman for the councils said ‘We will undertake the necessary investigation to determine the nature and possible source of that contaminant.’

Sainsbury’s have said that they are in contact with Jane and are also supporting the health officers as they investigate the incident.
