Fiona Ellwood, a dental nurse honoured in the Queen’s Birthday List, has spoken of her jubilation to be given a prestigious BEM award. “My aspirations for dental nursing has always been to lay the foundations so others can have choices, make informed decisions, and doors can be opened.”
The BEM (British Empire Medal) is awarded for civil or military service that is deemed to be of special note and, therefore, worthy of the Queen’s recognition. Fiona’s array of contributions to dental nursing are what have prompted the award. This includes chairing the National Oral Health Group. In addition, Ms. Ellwood is a patron and executive director of the Society of British Dental Nurses. She has also worked tirelessly to pass on her knowledge to a new generation of aspiring dental professionals. Achievements include a senior lecturer post and an external examination role, amongst other things.
Her final words were. “‘The society is taking my visions forward and for that, I am eternally grateful. So today I celebrate dental nursing on a different level.” A big congratulations on a well-deserved award!
