What causes an abscess in the mouth?

Typically an abscess in the mouth will form due to the collection of bacteria which then causes infection. Bacteria is always present in the mouth but poor dental hygiene can cause bacteria to stick around and multiply. This bacteria can infiltrate the teeth and gums and can also turn into plaque. When bacteria or plaque are not removed it can progress into the forming of an abscess. The abscess will present itself as a pus filled sack. The sack develops due to the body sending an abundance of white blood cells to the infection site which then causes some cells to die. The death of these cells then creates a cavity which fills with pus. An abscess can develop very quickly and will need immediate treatment.

The three types of dental abscess

Periapical abscess: This type of abscess develops in the pulp within the tooth. Bacteria can enter through small holes or cavities in the teeth. An accumulation of pus forms up at the root and causes pain, especially when chewing. The most likely treatment for this is a root canal procedure to eradicate the infection and stabilise the tooth.

Periodontal abscess: A periodontal abscess forms in the bone structure of the tooth and can cause bone loss if not treated quickly. Sometimes the tooth will need to be removed with this type of infection.

Gingival abscess: With this kind of abscess the infection is contained within the gum tissue and does not affect any other part of the mouth or teeth. Antibiotics will be needed to fight the infection and the abscess may need to be drained.
