Cone Beam CT Scan

Advanced Dentistry

At Pearl Dental Clinic we are pleased to offer our patients the cutting edge Kavo OP 3D CBCT scan technology available onsite at the clinic for improved accuracy of diagnosis and safer treatment planning. We use dental CBCT technology for diagnosis, root canal treatments, wisdom tooth extractions, dental implants, management of dental trauma and orthodontics.

What is a CBCT?

CBCT (Cone Beam Computed tomography) scans provide three dimensional and cross-sectional images of teeth, jawbones, and the entire oral cavity. CBCT shows oral structures in 3D which makes it much more accurate and sensitive than traditional 2D dental x-rays. CBCT is an advanced x-ray equipment used when regular dental or OPG x-rays are not sufficient diagnostically.

What are the benefits of CBCT?

CBCT scan identifies the exact location of anatomical structures and shows the precise contours of the jawbones. This makes carrying out certain dental treatments much safer for patients.

In comparison to standard x-rays, a dental CBCT scan is a much more detailed and effective method of capturing information about your dental health. It shows both bones and soft tissue, whereas traditional x-rays show hard tissues only.

CBCT uses less radiation and requires fewer scans to see the different views and angles of your mouth.

It is a comfortable experience as it works by rotating outside the mouth rather than inside the mouth.

CBCT is much more sensitive and accurate than dental x-rays, meaning it can positively identify disease, even in cases where traditional dental x-rays are unable to show the presence of any disease.

CBCT is very helpful for patients who suffer from gagging reflex when having traditional dental x-rays taken. The outside the mouth CBCT machine does not cause any patient gagging.

We may need to do a CBCT scan to help:

  • Plan for tooth extractions or surgical removal of impacted wisdom teethin order to avoid any damage to surrounding vital nerve tissue
  • Analyse socket bone quality and quantity and surrounding nerves and sinuses for accurate placement of Dental Implants
  • Analyse root canal anatomy for Root Canal Treatment thoroughly to avoid missing and leaving root canals unfilled
  • Analyse root positions accurately for Orthodontic treatments such as for braces and Invisalign
  • Diagnose Head and Neck Tumours and Cysts
  • Diagnosis and management of dental trauma
  • Plan reconstructive surgery
  • Diagnose Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders

What is involved in a Dental CBCT scan?

Before images are taken with our CBCT scanner, patients are asked to remove all items in the head and neck area containing metal, such as jewellery, hairpins, glasses, hearing aids. Metal objects may cause the images taken to be distorted.

No other preparation is required.

You will be asked to remain very still during the scan. The imaging machine will rotate entirely around your head and will take around 150-200 high resolution 2D images which will then be combined into a precise 3D image.

The entire scan only takes a couple of minutes, and this includes the time required to remove objects and accessories that may interfere with the image.

Your scan images are then sent to an experienced Oral & Maxillofacial Consultant Radiologist who will provide us with a full written report. This radiologist report is invaluable for us to reach the correct diagnosis for your case.

Are Dental CBCT Scans Safe?

CBCT scans are low dose examinations and give an x-ray dose to the patient that is considerably less than a medical CT scan.

Dental CBCT scans give the equivalent of a few days of average background radiation. There are no health concerns for patients and no side effects are expected after the scan.

It is recommended that CBCT scans are avoided during pregnancy.
