Bad breath, also known as Halitosis, is a very common problem affecting many people and is often caused by oral hygiene problems. Halitosis can also be caused by smoking, spicy diets, gastric problems, respiratory infections, dry mouth syndrome, certain drinks such as coffee, tooth cavities, and loosely fitting dentures and braces.
At Pearl Dental Clinic, we will assess your mouth to find the cause(s) of halitosis and establish a professional hygiene program to suit your needs. Rest assured we will be able to help. Because effective cleaning at home is essential, we recommend the tools listed below.
Manual Brushing
Use small circular movements with the brush held at 45 degrees to the tooth.
Move systematically around the mouth.
Remember to clean the behind, inside, and the biting surfaces of the teeth.
A good technique will take 2 minutes.
Power Brushing
Angle the bristles at 45º to the gum line.
There’s no need to scrub – hold the brush in position and after a few seconds sweep the bristles away from the gum.
Repeat around the outer and inner surfaces of all teeth.
The whole procedure should take about 2 minutes.
Compact Tuft Brush
The Compact Tuft Brush has a dome shaped head with extra soft filaments.
It is perfect for cleaning around sensitive gums, partly erupted teeth, and along the gumline.
Interdental Brushing
The TePe interdental brush is used to clean in between teeth for fresh breath.
Used daily, it removes plaque and food debris where your usual brush cannot reach.
Proximal Brushing
The TePe Proximal brush comes in 7 sizes for cleaning different sized spaces.
Use daily to remove plaque and food debris from between the teeth.
The brush is particularly useful for cleaning the back teeth.
Interspace Brush
Periodontal disease causes pocketing around the necks of the teeth, which bacteria thrive in.
The TePe Interspace brush can access these pockets and disrupt bacteria.
Flossing
Debris accumulates between the teeth.
Use the floss until all the plaque is removed.
Work the floss gently under the gum.
Mini-Flosser
Conventional flossing can be difficult when the teeth are very close together.
The Miniflosser can help gain access to the interdental areas.
A Specially designed bite plane allows you to gently ease the floss between the teeth.
Super Floss
Superfloss can be used under bridges to keep the area clean and remove food debris and bacteria.
Mouth Rinse
Plaque build-up can lead to inflamed gums.
A mouth rinse can help by removing the plaque and reducing the inflammation.
Tongue Cleansing
85% of bad breath originates in the mouth, most of which comes from the tongue.
Stagnating plaque bacteria and food debris can give off an offensive odour.
Tongue cleansing removes unwanted bacteria from the tongue’s surface that cause bad breath.
Use daily for fresh breath, improved taste, and a healthier mouth.
