Diet coke affects the tooth enamel within minutes

A UK pharmacist has released a step-by-step guide to the way a can of Diet Coke affects the body immediately after it has been drunk and up to an hour later. Niraj Naik, who runs a blog called The Renegade Pharmacist, has created an informative poster to tell people how the fizzy drink can damage the body and cause tooth wear.

As well as leading to weight gain and increased appetite due to depleted nutrients, the drink can do damage to your teeth within only a few minutes of exposure. Just ten minutes after drinking the fizzy soda, it tricks the taste buds and attacks the teeth; ‘the phosphoric acid attacks the enamel in your teeth, while the artificial sweeteners like aspartame hit your system. Aspartame may trigger taste receptors and trick your body into thinking it has just processed sugar.’

The ‘infographic’ has gone viral as fizzy drink lovers have been shocked at the fast acting ingredients in Diet Coke and other similar products. In the first ten minutes the teeth are subjected to acid attack, quickly followed by the body switching into fat storage mode ten minutes after that. At just forty minutes, the body can start to become addicted to the caffeine and aspartame contained in the drink, and at 60 minutes the body is depleted of nutrient, which can cause hunger, thirst and poor concentration.
