Consumers should carefully consider their options when it comes to teeth whitening if they wish to avoid permanent damage and perhaps even poisoning, one expert has said.
Kristina Kawas, writing for Glam Scene, explained that hydrogen peroxide can be poisonous if it is swallowed, while the chemicals could also strip away tooth enamel, making them appear more yellow than before.
Although she said DIY kits that have a concentration level around 0.5 are usually safe, it may be wise to seek an expert in cosmetic dentistry to be sure.
"If you feel like your teeth could use some brightening, think twice before you pick up the whitening products," Ms Kawas urged.
Last month a study published by Nutrition and Diet News suggested that teeth whitening treatment could make patients happier by causing them to smile more often.
This then leads to them receiving more smiles from other people, generating a positive feedback loop.
